Got Holonomy? Preparing for the COVID 2.0 Era

Education systems across our world are struggling with how to best support our learners and how to engage students in current educational settings.

Esteemed equity champion and educator Linda Darling-Hammond shared, “As the coronavirus pandemic continues, it is clear that picking up where we left off and returning to business-as-usual in education will not be possible. In many ways, this is a good thing. Our education system has been deeply unequal and erratic in delivering on the promise of a quality education for all of America’s children.”

As an advocate, she asserts 10 policy moves for states in the COVID 2.0 era:

  1. Close the Digital Divide
  2. Strengthen Distance Learning
  3. Emphasize authentic learning and assessments
  4. Ensure supports for social-emotional learning
  5. Redesign schools for stronger relationships
  6. Support community schools
  7. Expand learning time
  8. Use formative assessments that support growth
  9. Leverage more equitable school funding
  10. Sustain early childhood education programs

In addressing such policy ideas, have you ever found yourself needing the details and the big picture at the same time? Arthur Koestler (1972) refers to this part and whole interaction as holonomy. So, how might you be able to see both the part and whole importance simultaneously?

A way to amplify such interaction is with enterprise reporting systems. Enterprise reporting systems accelerate holonomy for organizations by meeting the multiple detail and whole picture interests of the stakeholders that interact with the system of schooling. Students, parents, teachers, policy-makers, financial analysts, community members (and many more) can come together to inquire and seek answers to their questions. In turn, nimble and personalized dashboards can help these stakeholders see the parts and whole in simple, yet meaningful ways.

Thinking about Darling-Hammond’s top 10 policy moves, where might you find the detailed and big picture data points in your system? What data would you like to collect now and in the future?Catch the author at the Tech & Learning Conference: Future-Proofing your District Plan virtual event on Friday, May 29th 2020.
